Included are the examinations, tests, and imaging required to treat, assess prognosis and determine recommendations.

Heart rate, respiratory rate, gut sounds, mucous membrane characterizations, rectal palpation and blood work all contribute to the initial assessment.

Treatment may consist of pain controlling medications, smooth muscle relaxants to help gas pass, electrolytes, mineral oil via nasogatric intubation and cecal decompression as appropriate.
“Choke” is an obstruction of the esophagus.

Horses appear distressed and typically have saliva & feed material coming from both nostrils. They often cough and extend their heads forward and down towards the ground.
